Icon's life was characterised by humility, humour

September 16, 2006, 13:00

Ronnie Kasrils, the intelligence minister and senior ANC member, says the life of Hilda Bernstein, the movement's struggle icon, was characterised by her humility and humour.

Kasrils and leading national and provincial ANC alliance dignitaries attended a memorial service for Bernstein, who died at the age of 91 in Cape Town last week. Kasrils says her struggles have also contributed to the nation building process.

Bernstein is survived by four children and seven grandchildren.
